Compulsory Basic Training - CBT Plus

This course variation is aimed at those students 21 years or older who intend to go on to taking a full Motorcycle Test.

This is a full CBT but with an extended road ride element and includes a riding introduction to a larger 500cc motorcycle.

Normally this course will be one to one hence the higher price.

The CBT course was introduced in December 1990 with the aim of improving road safety and reducing motorcycle accidents. All learner motorcycle, scooter and learner moped riders must successfully complete a CBT course before riding on the road. The only exception being if you have passed a car driving test before 1 February 2001, then you are permitted to ride a 50cc moped restricted to 30 mph (50kmph) on that licence without having to obtain a CBT.

The CBT course contains the five elements that provide all the requirements laid down by the Department of Transport, and combines these with a whole range of additional information to ensure a complete understanding of basic motorcycling or scooter riding skills and forms the basis for safe and enjoyable riding for life.

The course is designed for the beginner. It is a training course and not a test, so don't worry if you have never ridden a motorcycle/moped - this course is designed for YOU!

Once you have successfully completed your CBT, you will be issued a DL196 (CBT) certificate which will allow you to ride up to a 125 cc (if you are 17 and over) motorcycle or scooter. Your vehicle must display L-plates and you may not carry passengers (pillions). The CBT certificate remains valid for two years. If in that time you have not taken and passed a practical test for category A or A2 you will have to take another CBT course to carry on riding.

A comprehensive guide to the CBT course can be viewed here.
